Jobs in the CS Department
There are several sorts of paid positions available to CS students. Jobs become open and are filled at the discretion of the professor who is hiring. Pay is at the workstudy rate.
Hiring for the applied groups usually occurs at the end of first semester after a publicized informational meeting, and a student will be hired for a period of two or three semesters so that some continuity exists within the groups. Generally, a student is expected to commit 10 hours per week to applied group work. No knowledge or skills are strictly necessary; a willingness to learn is.
From time to time, professors will require teaching assistants, graders, or tutors. TAs can work for credit. Duties may vary but will include answering thirty million questions and feeling like a powerful error-finding machine. The number of hours also varies widely. A professor who needs assistants will publicize that fact to those who are eligible.
