Earlham College Database Administration Group

About the Group

The DBA Group's primary responsibility is the on-going development and
maintence of WebDB, Earlham's web based course registration and advising
tool. This environment puts the DBA Group in a position where
maturity, trustworthiness, and reliability are the primary criteria when we
select people to work with us. Strong technical skills and the ability to
work well with others are two other items high on our list of desired traits.

Job Description

The basic responsibilities asked of students in the group are:

Attend weekly planning meetings (about 1 hour)

	Install and configure RDBMS software
Keep track of your time and what you are working on
Emergency repairs (duct-tape, binder's twine, etc.)
A total of 10 hours/week of your time

In return you can expect to learn a whole bunch about the operational,
technical, and theoretical issues associated with RDBMSs. Since there is
so much of an investment made by both you and the rest of the group in terms
of training, etc. we ask that people commit to the group for a minimum of
one year.

Programming and Problem Solving (or the equivalent experience)
Advanced Programming (or the equivalent experience)
	Familiarity with Un*x

	System administration experience

We hope that students in the DBA Group will take the Database Systems course
as soon as practical if they haven't already.
