Te Papa is probably the single best museum in the country
The Karori Bird Sanctuary in Wellington is a great place to bird and learn about New Zealand's conservation and protection efforts of endangered species such as the Kaka parrot, the Stitch bird, and the Kiwi. It is an example of an "exclosure" meaning it keeps predators (such as the Australian possum) out but allows birds to roam freely in and out.
