AWPE: Red River Gorge Rock Climbing - Spring Semester 2006
Course Description
The Red River Gorge Rock Climbing class is intended to give participants the skills necessary to safely venture into the field of outdoor rock climbing. Students will gain the knowledge necessary to judge for themselves what to climb and what to trust when climbing with another, more experienced climber. This course is intended for students who either have previously climbing experience, or highly motivated beginners. The class will compose of three mandatory sessions and the final trip to Red River Gorge. The Red River Gorge, or “the red”, is a world known climbing location. It is home to hundreds of climbs and miles of trails. The area also has several state parks and is part of one of the Nation’s largest National Forests, the Daniel Boone National Forest. The class will be outdoors at all times during the final trip.
Note: We will be camping and are not likely to have any form of restrooms available, besides Mother Nature. If this poses a problem for anyone, please talk to one of us before registering for the course.

Expectations
The Instructors will expect students to fully engage in all the activities related to this course. This means students must attend all meetings and show up on time. Again, attendance is mandatory. Failure to attend any meeting will result in immediate failure*. We also expect that students understand that this is a climbing course. We will be dealing with heights and potential hazards. We expect responsible behavior from all students. Indoor climbing and trips into the wilderness can be very fun, however they also have potential hazards. Students need to make decisions with their responsibility to the group in mind.
Students can expect that the instructors will be attentive to the student’s wishes and needs. Your instructors (Alex, Andrew, Brian and Katherine) will be responsible for ensuring class is as safe and fun as possible. All instructors are willing and happy to answer questions and help anyone in need. We truly enjoy this field and hope all our students leave this class feeling the same passion.
Clothing & Equipment
The final trip will be entirely outdoors and we will be camping. This means students will need to dress appropriately for the weather. We will be handing out lists of what each student should have at one of the later classes. If you have any questions regarding the list we give you, please contact the instructors.
Safety
Due to the fact that the activities this course focuses on have inherent dangers, it is important that students understand these dangers before classes begin. The dangers of rock climbing include, but are not limited to: rock falls, injuries on the approach to climbing areas, injuries caused by falling while climbing, and potential encounters with local wildlife. While these risks are serious, responsibility and well thought decisions can greatly reduce the likelihood of injury. It is not only the responsibility of the instructors to do their best to decrease the possibility of injury, but also the responsibility of the students to act in a responsible and compliant manner. All students will be expected to carefully read the waivers handed out at the first meeting. Anyone with questions regarding safety should be sure to ask the instructors to clarify the conditions before signing. If any individual is uncomfortable with the risks involved in this course, he or she has the right to withdraw from the course.
Enrolling
By signing the class roster, participants agree to the terms above and recognize that all students listed on the roster will be billed the class fee, as noted on WebDB. The class roster is the final enrollment list for the class and will be turned in to the Registrar’s office. Dropping this class after signing the roster will not result in a refund of course fees.
