Canyoning (also known as canyoneering) is the sport of travelling down canyons using a variety of techniques including walking, scrambling, climbing, jumping, abseiling, swimming and "li-loing" (using an inflatable air mattress). For this course, we will be traveling to the beautiful Zion National Park in Utah, where we will meet up with our American Canyoneering Association guides for 4 days of camping and canyoning.

Expectations:

Students should be prepared for 4 full days of hiking, be able to swim and be able tolerate heights. The better physical condition students are in, the more likely they are to enjoy the course. That being said, the canyons we are going to be hiking will not be too physically demanding and anyone who can walk for a day will be fine. Students will also be expected to maintain positive and inclusive attitudes towards each other and instructors. Attendance at all pretrip meetings is mandatory.

Skills Taught:

  • Basic canyon traveling/hiking skills
  • Canyoning equipment use and care
  • Wilderness and canyoning specific ethics ("leave no trace")
  • Basic camping (tent construction, cooking)
  • Canyoning canyon rating systems
