EQUIPMENT
•Backpack- needs to hold at least 4,000 cubic inches
•Sleeping bag- synthetic 0 or 20 degree bag recommended. Down acceptable.
•Insulation mat- handy for cushioning from the ground and, more importantly a barrier to the ground’s cold. Half size or full acceptable
•Mess kit comprised of:
o One bowl/ tupperware container
o One spoon/ fork/ spork
o One mug- insulated type recommended
•2 to 3 water bottles- needs to be the equivalent of more than 2 Nalgenes.
•Headlamp (recommended but optional)
•Knife (optional)
TOILETRIES- bring the bare minimum of what you need to survive these seven weeks. Toiletries often add extraneous weight, which you will later regret! However, you are the ultimate judge of what you need to survive.
•Toothbrush, toothpaste (the toothpaste is optional)
•All prescribed medications
•Feminine products for women.
FOR YOUR FEET
•One pair hiking boots
o MUST be high top.
o Leather with minimal seems are recommended. Although they will take longer to break in (two to three months of regular use) they will eventually conform to your foot’s shape more closely and they will remain better intact with fewer seems.
o Waterproofing is nice, but not necessary. If you would like waterproof boots, there are numerous solvents available at most outdoor supplies stores (REI has several options) that are often cheaper than the cost of boots that come waterproofed.
•One pair camp shoes- must have closed toes. Old tennis shoes are ideal.
•Three to Four pairs thick, non cotton socks (smartwool is ideal, any wool acceptable)
•Two to Three pairs liner socks (optional)- liner socks are typically composed of synthetic material, rayon, silk, etc. – NO cotton.
CLOTHES
•Base Layer
o Two changes of undergarments (avoid cotton – at least one pair non cotton)
o Long underwear bottoms- silk or synthetic recommended
o Long underwear undershirt- (optional) same material
o Tee shirt
o Long-sleeved non-cotton shirt (polyester, rayon, silk, wool)
•Insulation
o WARM pants: polartec, wool, fleece, synthetic material
o 2 pieces WARM torso wear: polartec, wool, fleece. Down is not recommended. One sweater and one jacket recommended
o Vest of same material (optional)
o WARM non-cotton hat
•Outer Layer
o Rain pants of synthetic material- must be water repellent or water proof
o Rain jacket/ coat of synthetic material- must be water repellent or water proof
Check any additional items with us before leaving- you WILL NOT want extra weight
