NZ Leader Planning Checklist

Pre-course Planning (listed roughly by order of priority):

Fall- 1.5 years out

•Develop faculty seminar course

•Meet with current/previous program leaders for information sharing

•Meet with IPO/Wilderness to plan for Spring recruitment

Spring- 1 year out

•Course info packet to IPO

•Marketing on campus (develop program flyers, emails, ads in Word, other)

•Hold interest Meetings

•Application Deadline (March 1st)

•Plan scout trip (tickets, itinerary, etc.)

•Program Assistant position (announce and hire)

•Interviews

•IPO leader training mtg

•Selection and preliminary group mtg (late Spring)

•Orientation syllabus- key dates (so students can plan around)

Summer- 8 months out

•Course “anchors” and rough itinerary established

•Leader scout trip to NZ as needed

•Begin working out rough field budget

•Finalize orientation schedule/activities

Fall- 4 months out

•Faculty van training as needed

•Update equipment list and other student handouts as needed

•Field Budget meeting with IPO/Wilderness

•Work out itinerary- dates, big reservations/permits confirmed

•Hold orientation sessions/retreat

•Program visas (faculty & student)

•Plane tickets for faculty and PA

•Faculty Housing (earlier the better)

•Coordinate any equipment needs with Wilderness

•IPO Leader mtg

•Syllabus Descriptions

•Update Handbook and Parent letter

•Course reader(s) compiled as needed (particularly if using U.S. texts)

•Hold final budget/finance mtg. with Wilderness/IPO

•Coordinate gear check-out (both student and group)

•Final check-in with students
