Week in the Gila
Course Summary
This is a course designed for middle school students who wish to learn more about spending time in the back country. The course will focus on some hard skills, but the main purpose will be developing comfort and familiarity in a new setting. Among several activities, students will hike, explore, and participate in at least one short solo time experience (in a very safe setting-kids will not be tossed to wolves).

Expectations
-Students
Students must be present for the pre-trip meeting and the gear check in order to be allowed to participate. Students will be expected to participate actively in with the group. In addition, students will learn how to pack backpacks, set up tents, tarps, and stoves, make meals. Each student will be asked, they will not be required, to keep a journal for writing, drawing, or anything else they can think of, on the trip. Students are also expected to participate in at least one "solo time". More on this later...

Gear List for Gila Backpacking
The Gila National Forest has spectacular scenery ranging from high cool mountains with aspen and douglas fir to warm semi-arid lowlands with juniper, oak and cactus. It is one of the more remote and least developed National Forests in the southwest. Covering 3.3 million acres of publicly owned forest and range land, the Forest is the sixth largest National Forest in the continental United States.
