Permits/Reservations

We do not need reservations, but we will need the following permits:
-Park Entrance fee ($10/vehicle/week)
-Backpacking Permits ($5/per person/night)

Gear Rental
Because this is a casual trip, we can improvise somewhat with our gear. We should be able to find most of the things we will need in our various garages and basements. We may also rent gear from local outfitters and/or the Earlham College Wilderness Department.
Travel Information
The drive from EL, MI to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is about 200 miles each way (400 round trip) and should take about four hours each way.
We will be driving the most fuel-efficient car we can find, and in order to be more efficient with our time and resources, we will try to make bathroom and snack break at gas stations when we need to buy gas.
Once we reach the park, we will eventually need to take the ferry over to the island. This will cost $29 per person.
Depending on availability, we may detour on South Manitou for a tour and then head over to North Manitou for camping.
