Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Trip July 8 - 15
DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this trip is to provide a positive learning environment where participants can experience safe adventure and fun in the outdoors while learning team work, respect for others, themselves, and their surroundings. Participants will spend seven days in the beautiful backcountry of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota. The trip will cover thirty miles of water and will consist of canoeing during the day and camping at night. Camping, canoeing, and basic wilderness skills will be taught. There will be group building activities to participate in. Participants must be 13-16 years old. No previous experience is required, but participants must be ready to work hard and have fun!
EXPECTATIONS
Participants
~To attend all meetings; if unable to, need to contact instructors
~Come prepared on the trip with necessary personal gear and good attitude
~Work together in groups during canoeing, portages, setting up camp, other activities
~Be mindful of surroundings, respectful to others and environment
~Have fun!
UV Instructors (two, one per group)
~Lead a safe, fun trip
~Teach wilderness skills such as canoeing, camping, etc.
~Facilitate learning during camp set-up, cooking, etc.
~Use a map and navigate
~Lead group building activities
~Have Wilderness First Aid/First Responder certification
Parent/UV Staff Chaperones (two, one per group)
~Help UV instructors with group management, activities, etc.
~Come up with and provide main learning activities for children every night
~Be an extra pair of hands and eyes to ensure that children are safe and having fun
DATES
- Information Session May 21, 6pm - 8pm. For anyone interested in finding out more about the 2006 BWCAW trip. Information and expectations will be dicussed. Only fourteen participants will be allowed to go, so after all questions have been answered those who will be going on the trip will be chosen randomly.
- Cook-Out June 11, 5pm - 8pm. This is for the participants only. It's a chance for them to get to know each other and have fun eating good food and playing games.
- Pre-Trip Meeting June 25, 6pm - 8pm. All participants and parents must attend. Logistics of the trip will be covered, an itinerary andLink title gear list will be handed out.
