Biography:
Jay Roberts is the Director of Wilderness Programs and an Instructor in both the Education and Environmental Programs at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. Prior to his work at Earlham, Jay was the Director of the Poplar Ridge Experiential Learning Center at the University of Virginia. He holds a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Virginia and is currently completing a doctorate in Curriculum Theory at Miami University. For the last fifteen years, Jay has been involved in almost every aspect of experiential education. He has directed summer academic enrichment camps both nationally and internationally, facilitated corporate training programs for companies such as American Express and Fannie Mae, and worked as field staff for an outdoor-based recovery program. In his current position at Earlham, Jay has led semester programs in Environmental Studies in the Southwest U.S. and Mexico, month-long instructor courses in Northern Ontario, and administers the degree program in outdoor education. Jay’s research interests include constructions of experience in the curriculum, brain-based education, and the intersections between ecology and education. His recent publications include “Beyond Learning By Doing- The Brain Compatible Approach and Experiential Education” published in the Annual Editions of the Journal of Educational Psychology, and “Disney, Dewey, and the Death of Experience in Education” published in the Journal of Education and Culture.
