Gear List for Gila Backpacking

All of the following items you should be able to find or get without spending a lot of money. No fancy shmancy gear is neccesary. If you don’t have all of these, ask around, you should be able to find people willing to lend items. You can also ask us, we usually have extra stuff! Second-hand stores are a great place to find cheap items too.
Remember, everything you take you will be carrying. Extra ounces add up!

Feet
- Hiking Boots – over the ankle, some kind of “high top" hiking boots (Do not get new boots for the trip. If you need boots and do not have them borrow them. Make sure that you do not take brand new boots hiking)
- Socks – 3 pairs wool or synthetic (absolutely no cotton)
- camp shoes– to be worn in camp (old tennis shoes work perfectly, or sandals that will strap onto feet-both are not needed!)

Lower body
- Long underwear bottoms – must be synthetic, no 50/50 blends
- Mid-weight layer – wool/synthetic (e.g., fleece) pants (a pair of old wool dress pants from a second hand store will work perfectly)
- Shorts – synthetic gym shorts work well
- Rain pants
- Underwear – 3 or 4 pairs for women

Upper body
- Long underwear top – must be synthetic, no 50/50 blends
- T-shirt – can be cotton
- Thick wool sweater or fleece
- Warm vest or other extra layer
- Winter hat and gloves – must be wool or fleece
- Rain jacket

Miscellaneous
- Toothpaste and toothbrush (small travel size)
- Sunscreen (small size)
- Brimmed hat
- Chap stick
- Bandanas-these are good all purpose items bring at least 2
- Tampons/feminine hygiene products
- Bowl and spoon (Tupperwear works great)
- 2 one liter water bottles – Nalgenes work well, as do Gatorade bottles and water bladders (Camelbak, Platypus, etc.)
- Flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries-nothing too big and heavy
- Journal and writing implements

- Sunglasses
- Gaiters
- Book

Gear
Will be provided by the gear room.
- Sleeping bag
- Sleeping pad
- Compass and whistle
- Backpack
- Stuff sacks
If you have gear of your own you want to bring, be sure to bring it to the gear checkout meeting so we can make sure it's adequate. Please do not bring too many extra items they will just take up space and weigh you down.
