Doing student evaluations

From WildWiki

Evaluations of students are a part of the course. Below are some suggestions for making the process go smoothly and can help students see their strengths and opportunities for improvement.

Return to AW Gen'l Curriculum

Divide up your brigade into "advisee groups". Each intsructor can take 2-3 students a piece to focus on.

Meeting #1 Should happen 1-2 days into the course. Meet with each of your students as a group (or individually) and show them the evaluation form and talk about the advising process. Emphasize the expectations of the course and also the ways students can use the advising role as a way to raise concerns or work on skills or issues throughout the course. Talk with your students about what they hope to get out of the course and the advising relationship.

Meeting #2 Should occur about 4-6 days into the course. This is the "mid-term evaluation." Meet with each of your students individually and begin by asking how the program is going for that student. Then go through each evaluation area being sure to ask them how they feel they are doing in that area FIRST before giving them any feedback from your end. You can choose to complete the form ahead of time and then discuss with the student or you can summarize the conversation with the student on the form after you have spoken. This is the best chance you have to correct inappropriate or ineffective behavior and to re-calibrate expectations with your students.

Meeting #3 Final evaluations- these should happen after the students have left the field but before the return to Earlham. You should use the same procedure as meeting #2 but obviously with a bit more emphasis on concluding the course. This is a great place to mention to strong students to consider working for the wilderness program when the fall semester begins.
