Christchurch
From WildWiki
Christchurch is the home base for the 2008 program. Below are some notes:
Laura Sessions, Director of American Universities International Programs Ltd, AUIP is a huge contact for the program. Her company helps with logistics and even curriculum development (particularly environmental science) for American university programs doing "island programs"- that is, working with their own leaders as opposed to having students enroll at university in NZ. She can do everything from arrange vans and travel to helping set up speakers and excursions.
Stonehurst YHA is a centrally located and nice backpacker/hotel with options for both groups and leaders in terms of housing.
Brazier Property Management is a good option for finding faculty housing in ChCh.
4Greenhouses is a company dedicated to helping folks temporarily re-locate to ChCh. They can do everything from assist with housing rental to giving you loads of helpful advice on schools, communities, grocery prices, etc.
Elspeth Kong runs Student Links which is the homestay service we will use for 2008. She is very willing to work with us on placements and seems very professional.
Christchurch Resource People (see separate database for contact info for these folks):
-Julian Carver is a ChCh resident and Quaker who is well connected to a number of environmental activities in ChCh and NZ in general.
-Billy O'Steen is an American living in ChCh and works at the University of Canterbury in the Center for Teaching and Learning. He is helping out a lot with some of the initial program set-up.
-Len Richardson is a retired History Professor who comes highly recommended and is willing to give some "one-off" lectures on NZ culture and history. He is particularly keen on NZ sport.
-Phillip Ferguson teaches NZ history and culture in the Bridges Program at the U. He will be teaching a NZ history component for the 2008 program.
-Kate Hewson is the Sustainability Coordinator at the U with her PhD in Environmental Science or something similar. She is an energetic and passionate person who students would like I think. She is also willing to have several students as interns with her for the semester.
