Experience the thrill and challenge of a winter camping and dogsledding course in the Boundary Waters with Outward Bound and Earlham College! This trip is an open enrollment course available for Earlham students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Earlham students taking this course will receive .5 AWPE credits for a "Winter Camping Seminar." The course will be run by Outward Bound in Ely, Minnesota. In previous years, several Earlham alumni who work for Outward Bound have served as our instructors for this course, making it a great opportunity for Earlham students, faculty, and alumni to share a special trip together. Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dates?

Trip dates are approximately January 2nd-12th, 2010. Trip participants may also fly directly to Duluth, MN rather than travel from Earlham in which case dates would be Jan. 3rd-Jan. 9th, 2010.

How Much Does It Cost?

Course fee (including transportation from Earlham) is $975 per person. Participants traveling on their own (by car or by plane) are responsible for their own transportation costs and will have a reduced course fee ($900). A shuttle from Duluth to Ely will be available.

Do I Need Previous Experience?

No, but you should be prepared for a physically rigorous trip including very cold temperatures (-30 F), snow, heavy lifting, skiing, and other forms of physical exertion. Participants in good to excellent general conditioning should expect to be challenged in a supportive and team oriented atmosphere.

How Much Contact Do We Have With The Dogs?

Each brigade will have 2 dog teams. Some participants will "mush" while others will ski ahead breaking trail. There are lots of daily chores and other activities required with the dogs so all participants can expect lots of quality time with the dogs.

How Do I Sign Up?

To confirm a spot, a non-refundable deposit of $300 c/o Earlham College must be sent to: Earlham College Wilderness Program, 801 National Rd West, Drawer 87, Richmond, Indiana 47374. The remaining balance will be due Jan. 1st, 2010.

What Else Do I Need?

The downloadable information sheet above lists equipment and clothing requirements. Many items such as tents, boots, sleeping bags, parkas, etc. are supplied by Outward Bound. You will also need to have a physician physical form completed as required by Outward Bound, USA.
