Assateague Island Adventure Syllabus
This is a general overview of how we will be spending our time in the Assateague Island National Seashore. There may be some changes, but generally this is what will be happening.
Day 1 Everyone meets in Ocean City, MD. We'll stay at the Best Western Hotel that evening. There will be an Introduction by the trip Leaders and a Q&A session with the parents.
Day 2 Parents depart. Leaders will introduce the equipment and supplies to the campers. Everything will be divied out. Travel to Assateague Island to set up camp.
Day 3 The beginning of a three day nature walk. Each walk is only 1/2 mile but full of life to discover! First we'll hike through Life of the Dunes. Instructors will teach campers about the surrounding environment. Next campers and leaders will spend the rest of the day on the beach.
Day 4 Hike through Life of the Forest and go through various lessons on the area. Campers will also learn about camp crafts like building a fire, a shelter and how to cook food in the outdoors.
Day 5 Hike through Life of the Marsh. Following this nature walk leaders will teach a lesson on LNT, and how to use a compas. if there is time campers will be able to swim or go on a bike ride depending on choice.
Day 6 Travel to Chincoteague Island. Here, campers will set up camp at Tom's Cove and spend the day exporing and having fun on the site. There will be a special dinner in the town.
Day 7 Canoeing on the bay! Leaders will instruct camper on various paddling techniques. Campers will shower and prepare for the two day backpacking trip.
Day 8 Start Hiking. This will be 6 mile hike that will start at Tom's Cove. This section of the trip will be the most vigorous. Most of the hiking will take place along the beach, and because the ground is sandy and unstable, it will be quite a hike! Day 9 The second day of hiking will be 7 miles long. Here we'll hike through marshes, forests and dunes. We'll be able to wrap up all we learned in the nature walks. The hike will end on the State Line. Here, I'll pick you up and we'll drive back to the Best Western in Ocean City.
Day 10 That morning and afternoon we'll get ready for the parents to come. We'll plan a couple of skits and presentations of our adventure. Parents will arrive for an early dinner and will enjoy our presentations. This will put an end to our trip!
