Transportation

Campers and leaders are expected to find their own means of transportation to Ocean City. If you need assisitance getting from the Airport to Ocean City, please let me know so I can find a way to accomodate you.

We will be renting two mini vans from a Budget Rental store in Atlantic City, MD. We will have the mini vans throughout the whole trip to get from place to place easily. There will not be much driving besides getting from Ocean City to Assateague(3 hours), Assateague to Chincoteague (1 hour), and then back to Ocean City (1.5 hours).

Directions to Assateague and Chincoteague

TO Chincoteague (Toms Cove): Take Route 50 east to Route 13 south. Take Route 13 into Virginia to VA Route 175. Turn left; follow Route 175 to the town of Chincoteague on Chincoteague Island. Take the first left in Chincoteague; after about 0.4 miles, turn right on Maddox Boulevard. The road proceeds directly into the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (entry fee); follow signs to Toms Cove Visitor Center to obtain your backcountry camping permit.

TO Assateague (North Beach): Take Route 50 east to MD Route 611. Turn right. Route 611 will pass the Barrier Island Visitor Center on the right after three miles. Permits for backcountry camping may be available here. Otherwise proceed across Sinepuxent Bay on the Verrazano Bridge (named for the first European explorer in these waters). When on Assateague, make the first avaiable right turn (Bayside Drive). Proceed to the North Beach parking area and campground/ranger station to obtain permits.

Reservations and Permits

Camping on Assateague

For our 5 day stay on Assateague we will be camping on the Bay side of the Island. Though we only need to reserve for one camp site, I find it best to divide the campers into two groups of five. This will keep things a lot calmer and easier to get things done. To make reservations call 1-888-432-2267 and if you need further information call (410) 641-2120. Each campsite will be $30 a night.

Camping on Chincoteague

We will camp for one night at Tom's Cove in Chincoteague Island. For reservations they suggest sending Reservation Request Form which you can find online: [www.chincoteague.com] Find the Reservation link, fill it out and send it to the following address:

Tom's Cove Park P.O. Box 122 Chincoteague, VA 23336

If you would like further information on the campground rules and maps go to [www.chincoteague.com]

We will also be spending a night in the Assateague Island Seashore backcountry. This will cost us 10$ per vehicle once we enter the park and a $5 backcoutry permit that we can purchase at Tom's Cove. I would recommend calling the park Ranger for more information: (410) 641-1441
