Trip Description:
We will hike on the last leg of the Appalachian trail(281miles) from the New Hampshire border to Mt. Katahdin in Baxter State Park. This "Maine" section is considered the most difficult part of the Appalachian Trail. From there we will visit beautiful Acadia for a couple of days and then head South via sailboat. This trip is designed to hit the best spots of Maine, the most beautiful and most fun! We will be hiking though forests and bogs, on boulders, along beaches and fianlly we will give our legs a break and sail. If you love outdoors adventures then this is the trip for you!
Goal:
HAVE FUN! Meet new people, form new friendships and learn from each other. Bascially have an awesome experience!
Dates:
- April 15th 2006: Informational Meeting: get applications, see numbers, level of interest. Expectations will be outlined further.
- April 25th: This is for participants only. The "getting to know everyone meeting," will have fun activities and free food!An itinerary, personal gear list and health form will be handed out.
- May 1st: Gear check, go over last minute ligistics.
- May 5th: Meet at Trail head just outside of Gorham NH, on Rout 2. At 6am!
- May 25th: Arrive on Iseboro Island, Turtle Head. Ferry leaves on the hour for Linconville, Me.

Group Size:
4-8 people of any age who are capable of hiking with a backpack, for an extended period of time(week).
Skill Level of Participants:
!!!Experience Required!!! Some sailing and hiking experience is required. Things you need to be able to do: swim, hike 6 hours a day, know basics of sailing. For this trip to be fun for everyone involved you should be in good physical condition and healthy enough to cope without encountering civilization for a number of weeks. If you are willing to work hard than some exeptions are possible. Please contact the trip leaders on an individual basis.(maycoab@earlham.edu)
Skill Level of Leaders: Required
- First aid certification
- prior camping/hiking experience as a leader
- ability to sail boat over 25ft, ability to use motor,
- navigation skills on water and land: use of charts, water safety and experience on ocean necessary!
- Familiarity with the area: Acadia, Baxter State Park, and Islands off coast of DownEast Maine.
- Age 19 and over.
