AW Contemplative Spirit Actvities

From WildWiki

Fostering the contemplative spirit on August Wilderness can be done in a variety of ways. The most frequently used activities include the use of solos, journaling, observation projects, "silent" meetings, and other moments of silence.

Solos

It is important to note that the archetypal 3-day solo typically done on AW is NOT required. What is required is that students on program experience solitude, quiet, and an opportunity for significant reflection while on course. That being said, a lengthier solo experience can often be a peak experience for students on course... when properly framed and implemented. How do you set your students up for success?

Give them practice:

Having students experience a 3-day solo as their first taste of this type of activity is a recipe for failure. Students (some would argue that this generation of students in particular) are not necessarily comfortable or prepared for extended periods of solitude or reflection. Help them work up to a longer solo by doing the following progressively through the course:

  • Moments of silence (especially around meal time or significant moments)
  • Quiet activities (silent paddle/portage, silent morning, etc.)
  • Mini-solo's (an hour or two early in the course in preparation for the longer solo)

Facilitation the right frame is also critical to a successful SOLO experience. Below is a sample frame for an AW solo experience:
