- Complete the de-multiplexor and the encoder circuits in TkGate. Attach the two circuit files to an email message and send them to me.
- Build and test (in simulation mode) a 2 bit de-coder circuit. Attach the circuit file to an email message and send it to me.
- No class today, I should be available via IRC (chat.earlham.edu, #infocom) and email most of the day but probably not during class time.
For Monday March 8th
- Work through the TkGate tutorial. You don't have to turn anything in for this but not completing all of it and understanding the details will make the rest of the work highly frustrating.
- Create a new circuit file in TkGate and build a 4 bit de-multiplexor as described in chapter 3 of Tanenbaum. Save the completed and tested circuit and be prepared to demonstrate it in class on Monday. Be sure to use simulation mode to test the circuit.
- Create a new circuit file in TkGate and build a 2 bit encoder. This is the compliment of the 2 bit decode that is described in chapter 3 of Tanenbaum. Save the completed and tested circuit and be prepared to demonstrate it in class on Monday. Be sure to use simulation mode to test the circuit.
- Re-do exercises 40 and 41 from chapter 3 if need be.

- Exercises 14, 16, 22, and 27.
For Monday February 15th
- Read pages 159 through 174 in chapter 3 of Tanenbaum.
- Exercises 6, 8, 9, and 11 from chapter 3.
- Consider Moore's law as applied to food production. Assume that in 2000 it took 1.8 acres of land to grow the food required for one person for one year. In 2020 how much will land will it take to produce the equivalent amount of food?
- Review the mid-term exam study guide and come to class with questions, etc.
For Thursday February 11th
- Exercises 13 and 14 from chapter 2.
- Read (or re-read) pages 135 through 159 in chapter 3 of Tanenbaum.
- Exercises 1-5 in chapter 3 of Tanenbaum.
For Monday February 8th
- Read Terabyte Territory by Brian Hayes and the interview with Jim
Gray. Come to class prepared to discuss their respective contents and any questions they raise for you.
- Finish, or re-finish as the case may be, all of the assigned exercises from chapter 2. The material in this class builds on itself in many ways, it's important that you have your feet underneath you at all times as we move forward.
- Read pages 135 through 159 in chapter 3 of Tanenbaum.

- Read pages 102 - 131 in chapter 2 of Tanenbaum.
- Exercises 26, 27, 29, and 34 from chapter 2.
