Green Sciences Group
Goals
- Educate the community about "green science", i.e. conservation,
alternative/renewable energy, and sustainable practices.
- Reduce the environmental footprint of Earlham's campus.
Immediate Initiatives
- Prototype wind and solar energy systems on-campus.
- A system to record, display, visualize, and analyze all energy
consumption data for the campus.
- The Green Zone, an area on the first floor of Dennis Hall where
students, faculty, visitors, etc. can see alternative/renewable
energy gear in-use and learn about all the Green Science projects
on campus.
What we look for in our members
- Clerical skills: necessary to ensure that the data collected by
energy audits and by recording equipment are accurate and complete.
- Project promotion: students are needed for development of various
presentation materials as well as speaking in front of small groups
(on and off campus) in order to promote initiatives, validate expenditures
to senior staff, and educate the community at large.
- Energy auditing: students who have taken/are currently taking classes
in this area and are familiar with the instruments necessary to conduct
formal energy audits. You should also feel comfortable in teaching
newcomers on how to use the equipment.
- Computer programming/database administration: students with a good
sense of user interface design and a creative touch for displaying
information in an interesting way. Initially, we will need to focus
on getting the data comparison calculations accurate and stable, but
eventually we will want to display time-lapse graphs and projections
for future savings.
Current Projects
- The Earlham Energy Awareness
Project (EEAP) is an incentive program
created to reward students for environmentally conscious living. Students
living in Earlham College friendship and theme houses can participate by
conserving gas, water and electricity.
